Fridge Struggling to Keep Up With the Summer Heat?

Hot weather can put extra pressure on your fridge. As temperatures rise, your fridge has to work harder to keep food at the right temperature — and problems that may have gone unnoticed during cooler months can start to show up.

Common Fridge Problems During Hot Weather

When the weather heats up, the extra workload can expose problems that weren't obvious during cooler conditions. Here are some of the more common issues we see.

Dirty condenser coils

Dust and debris around accessible condenser areas can make it harder for your fridge to release heat.

You may notice the fridge running for long periods, struggling to cool properly or feeling unusually warm around the outside.

Worn or damaged door seals

Your fridge door seals help keep cold air in and warm air out.

If a seal is damaged, worn or no longer making good contact, warm air can enter the fridge and you may notice condensation, temperature problems or the appliance running excessively.

Fan problems

Fans help circulate cold air through the appliance.

A fan problem can cause unusual noises or uneven temperatures — including situations where the freezer remains cold but the fridge section feels warm.

Restricted airflow

An overpacked fridge can make cooling more difficult.

Food pushed against internal vents can prevent cold air from circulating properly, leaving some areas warmer than others.

Electrical or starting component faults

Clicking noises, intermittent operation or a compressor that appears to be struggling to start can indicate an electrical or component problem.

These types of faults generally need proper diagnosis rather than repeated switching on and off.

A Few Things You Can Check at Home

Before booking a repair, there are some simple checks worth doing.

  • Make sure internal air vents aren't blocked by food.
  • Check that the fridge door is closing properly and the seals are making good contact all the way around.
  • Remove dust and debris from accessible condenser areas where appropriate.
  • Avoid putting large amounts of hot food straight into the fridge.
  • Check that there is enough ventilation around the appliance.

When Is It Time to Have the Fridge Checked?

If your fridge is still not holding temperature, is becoming warm quickly, making unusual noises or displaying an error code after you've checked the basics, it's worth having it inspected.

Don't necessarily wait until the fridge stops cooling altogether.

Catching a developing fault early can sometimes prevent further damage and may give you more repair options than waiting for a complete breakdown.
